August 12 – 13: 26th Annual Bluegrass in the Park Folklife Festival – Thought to be one of the oldest continuous and FREE bluegrass festivals in the United States, the Folklife Festival hosts musicians from all over the world. Not only does this event host world-class entertainment like The Grascals, but other events are on hand to keep festival-goers busy as well. Check out the Flippin’ & Flyin’ (Frisbee tournament) and Jammin’ & Jumpin’ (street pole vaulting) events. New this year is the Fox on the Run 5K. August 6: 7th Annual Bluegrass and Barbecue Concert – Food, fun and music at the Mounds all afternoon and into the evening! Pickin’ and BBQ will be plentiful, and additional beverages and food vendors will hawk their delicious wares. Coolers are allowed (although alcohol is not). August 20: 3rd Annual “Walk-N-Roll” with CJ’s Bus – This 2 mile and 5K event seeks to raise awareness and funds for the nonprofit CJ’s Bus, which sends buses to disaster-stricken areas with games and toys to occupy children while their parents deal with the aftermath. The course is half-trail and half-pavement. CJ’s Bus was founded by Kathryn Martin in honor of her 2-year-old son and other family members that died in the 2005 tornado. August 4 – 6: 50th Annual Volksfest!

Celebrate the rich German traditions of Evansville in true Deutschland style! This event is one of the most well-known annual Evansville festivals. Enjoy authentic German cuisine, including their famous and wonderfully named kraut balls. Fabulous German bands such as the Schnapps Band from Cincinnati, and the Rhein Valley Brass & Ratskeller Band will be adding some oomph-oompah as well. Children can party too, at the Kid’s Festival on Saturday from 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. Take in the biergarten or dance the polka; once you enter, you’re German. See more at evansvillegermania.com. August 19 – 27: Our American Cousin – This play is widely known as the last play Abraham Lincoln attended the night of his assassination on April 14, 1865. August 5 – 7: Avenue X – The New Harmony Theatre will close the season with Avenue X, a musical that takes you through the early days of doo-wop music by John Miller, with music and lyrics by Ray Leslee. Chronicling the Italian and African-American youth of 1960s Brooklyn, Avenue X exposes the early makings of the Backstreet Boys, ‘N Sync and others. This show is sure to impress young and old alike with its vibrant, evergreenev a capella tunes. Evening shows begin at 7:30 p.m. Saturday and Sunday matinees begin at 2:00 p.m.

August 13: 6th Annual Spirit Mind Body Sprint Triathlon – The sprint distance is .5 mile swim, 15 mile bike and 5K run, and the Olympic distance is a 1 mile swim, 25 mile bike and 10K run. The duathlon (new this year) is a 1K run, 15 mile bike ride and 5K run. The courses are very shady and scenic, with rolling hills and low traffic.
