Come see and learn about
snakes, turtles, lizards and even alligators at Wesselman Woods’ “Reptile Invasion” exhibit, June 14-15.

• June 1-2: Riverwind Gallery & Other Locations –Plein Air Pain-Out. Area artists are invited to participate in a public, open air “paint-out” where passersby can view works in progress and bid on the artwork later in the day, all to benefit local charity. Contact Norma Hill at 853-2537 for more.

• June 1: Evansville MuseumTransportation Day. Learn about the history of transportation and the early technologies that sparked an industrial revolution and brought our world closer together. Event hours are noon - 4 p.m.

• June 5-July 7: Bower-Suhrheinrich Foundation Gallery – Art in the City. The Arts Council of Southwestern Indiana’s new gallery at 318 Main Street hosts this new exhibit by local artists.

• June 6: Bower-Suhrheinrich Foundation Gallery –Artist’s Reception. Come meet the artists invited to participate in this year’s “Art in the City” juried exhibition.

• June 14-15: Wesselman Woods Nature Preserve – “Reptile Invasion” Exhibit. View snakes, turtles, lizards and even alligators at the tri-state’s largest reptile and amphibian exhibit.

Continuing through June 22: Evansville Museum“From Kites to Kittyhawk” Learn the story of aviation ingenuity in the time before the Wright Brothers’ famous flight.

Continuing through July 27: Evansville Museum“Real Robotics” Robots interact with visitors through a variety of mediums, such as light, light, speech, and remote control.

Continuing through July 13: Evansville Museum“381 Days” Story of America’s march toward black civil rights beginning with slave trade and moving through the movements of the 1960s.

• Ongoing at Willard Library – the Adele & Paul Torian Native American Leaders of the Mid-19th Century exhibition. This permanent exhibit features three rare volumes of Thomas L. McKenney’s History of the Indian Tribes of North America, which was published in 1838, 1842 and 1844.
 

MUSIC

• Wednesdays: Arts Council of Southwestern Indiana’s Bower-Suhrheinrich Foundation Gallery – Brown Bag Performances.

Bring your lunch down to the Arts Council’s gallery at 318 Main Street and check a wide array of artful performances while you eat! Performances are free and last from noon ‘til 1 p.m.

• Sundays: Penny Lane Coffeehouse – Open guitar jam at 3 p.m. & Live Celtic Music. Each Sunday, live Celtic music by Rowan Tree is performed from the intimacy of the stage at Penny Lane. Begins at 7:30 p.m.

• June 10: The Kallenbach Concert Series proudly presents Music for a Summer’s Evening. The concert will feature the St. John’s East Chancel Choir, Jennifer Korba, Soprano, Gina Moore, Gospel artist at Saint John’s East, 7000 Lincoln Ave. at 7 p.m.

THEATRE

• June 6-7: Underground at the Annex (Inside Washington Sq. Mall) – Talk About the Passion. When a child is murdered and the killer’s autobiography becomes a hit, a father wrestles with feelings of loss, guilt, desire for justice, and revenge as society around him glamorizes the evil deed. Tickets are $10.

• June 8-10, 15-17: Evansville Civic Theatre – You’re a Good Man Charlie Brown. The players of the community’s Civic Theatre bring Charles Schulz’s celebrated Peanuts characters to life. Tickets are $12-$17.

• June 13: Reitz Home Museum16th Annual Mystery Event. Gumshoes and crack detectives are invited to join local celebrities as they act out a suspenseful “whodunit” mystery in the vein of Sherlock Holmes and Mrs. Marple inside the historic Reitz Home Museum. Tickets are $100 and space is limited. Call 426-1871 for details.

• June 13-15, 19-22, 26-29: New Harmony Theatre – William Shakespeare’s Othello. Performance of this famous Shakespearean tragedy by the New Harmony Theatre players.

FESTIVALS

• June 7: Evansville Riverfront Pagoda – Downtown Multicultural Festival & Dragons on the Ohio. Introduce yourself to a menagerie of international cultures in the tri-state. Festivities will include food from around the globe, musicians, dancers and performers, and vending booths will carry art, jewelry and etcetera from a variety of cultures. Traditional Chinese Dragonboat races will take place simultaneously on the river. Contact Jocee Gleason at GAGE for details: 424-2986.

• June 7: Garvin Park (Beside Bosse Field) – Pickin’ on the Pigeon Family Music Festival. There will be local bands, children’s activities, and even canoe rides in the beautiful outdoor setting of Wesselman Woods.

• June 7-14: Central Park on Henderson Riverfront – 18th Annual W.C. Handy Blues and Barbecue Festival. Free blues music in the park all week long. Festival sports plenty of venders with good barbecue, lots of music, dance and good times at this annual tri-state favorite.

• June 14: Haynie’s Corner Arts District (Corner of Adams and 2nd) – Goosetown Festival. This year’s Goosetown street festival is a partnership between the Art Colony Gallery, Sworrab Enterprises, Funk in the City, and the Goosetown Neighborhood Association to benefit the Boys and Girls Club of Evansville’s arts programs. • June 26-28: Owensboro’s International Bluegrass Music MuseumROMP River of Music Party. Annual celebration of bluegrass music with over 30 of the best bluegrass bands in the country. Visit their website for a schedule of artists.

• June 26-29, July 4: Evansville Riverfront Evansville Freedom Festival and Thunder on the Ohio. Celebrate the founding of a nation by and for the people and the freedoms upon which it stands at the annual Freedom Festival.

• June 7: LST 325 at Marina Pointe – LST 325 D-Day Reenactment. American and German actors from Midwestern states join to reenact this pivotal battle of WWII’s European theatre, the invasion of Normandy.

• June 8: Evansville Museum – Deconstructing the Montgomery Bus Boycott. The Director of the Troy University Rosa Parks Museum presents a PowerPoint illustrated lecture about this historic event in American history at 2 p.m.

• June 10: Tracy Zeller Jewelry – Junior Diva Day. Mothers and daughters welcome to come and treat themselves to a day of pampering and high-fashion fantasies complete with gourmet meals and valet parking. Contact 423-4376 for details.

• June 13-15: Vanderburgh 4-H Center – Southern Indiana Antique Machinery Show. View historic and valuable antique farm machinery and learn  a thing or two about the history of industry and agriculture.

• June 14-15: Ribeyre Gymnasium, downtown New Harmony – 7th Annual Golden Raintree Antique Show. There will be display pieces and dealers with specialty shops. Admission is free. Food and drink will be available. Visit www.newharmony.biz or call Cindy Smotherman at 682-4811 for more.

June 15: Evansville Museum – POWs of WWII. If you’ve seen the movie The Great Escape with Steve McQueen, you’ll recognize the subject matter here, as one of the real-life orchestrators of that “Great Escape” from the German Stalag Luft III POW camp, Charles Huppert of Evansville, tells his story! Don’t miss this.

• June 19: Rapp-Owen Granary – Summer Hat Luncheon. Don your summer hats, ladies, and participate in a catered luncheon in support of Historic New Harmony’s efforts to preserve the community and its history. Tickets $25.
