AIDS 1.jpgThose listed above all had a significant impact on pop culture not only due to the talents that they shared with audiences but also because each one of the named died of an AIDS-related illness. The HIV/AIDS epidemic has spread worldwide – even to our minute corner of the universe. We have all seen the PSAs preaching about safe sex and the spread of HIV/AIDS in the United States, but how many out there still contract this disease through dirty needles and unprotected sex every year? According to the HIV/AIDS awareness organization, Until There’s a Cure, the following facts might make you more thoughtful about your recreational activities…

  • Over 22 million people have died from AIDS.
  • Over 42 million people are living with HIV/AIDS, and 74 percent of these infected people live in sub-Saharan Africa.
  • Over 19 million women are living with HIV/AIDS, mostly spread from heterosexual activity.
  • Half of all new HIV cases are people under 25.

These stats are made to scare you, because AIDS is a scary disease that is rapidly spreading worldwide. So far, knowledge is our best weapon, especially in the USA. The rest of the world battles rape and a severe lack of education but many of AIDS cases in the USA can be prevented.

In case you have been living under a rock for the past, oh, 20 years, acquired immune deficiency syndrome or acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS or Aids) is a set of symptoms and infections resulting from the damage to the human immune system caused by the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). Your immune system is made up of white blood cells; these cells primary function is to attack bacteria, fungi, parasites and viruses, which make you sick. HIV attacks these white blood cells and without them, humans are rendered helpless to all the foreign entities that invade our bodies every day.

So how does one acquire such a vicious virus? HIV is transmitted through direct contact of a mucous membrane or the bloodstream with a bodily fluid containing HIV, such as blood, semen, vaginal fluid, and breast milk. You can not catch the virus from saliva, tears or sweat.

On October 11th, from noon to 4 p.m., join the Evansville AIDS Resource Group for a day of fun and awareness at Garvin Park. The walk begins at 2, and late registration is from noon until 2. Enjoy food, live music, contests and a health fair.

Until the AIDS Walk, be sure to collect donation from friends and family; not only will you be helping fight AIDS but you can also obtain some pretty snazzy prizes from a t-shirt to a silver “Until There’s a Cure” bracelet.
