Ashley West-Albin
When we are children, we
look forward to the Christmas season more than anything else all year long.
Misfit toys, Frosty, Santa, Rudolph and all the other entities we relate to the
holidays made us drunk with excitement and anticipation from the end of
trick-or-treating until that long-awaited morning when we peer through
sleep-ridden eyes to behold the cornucopia of ecstasy that lies before us. We
rip through paper and bows to get to the goodies that will quench the thirst of
desire until, at least, our birthdays. Growing up, we all went through the
pubescent years of eye rolling and snarling at the thought of Christmas
specials and dreaded family time. However, after our first semester of
college we come to appreciate the month-long hiatus and all the magic of the
holiday’s returns. Our priorities change too. We once coveted videogame systems
and beautification tools; now we are thrilled and delighted to receive Mr.
Foreman’s latest fat fighter, a Sam’s-sized box of Ramen noodles and tires.
Yep, in high school I scoffed when Dad gave me tires: now, I beg for my rubbery
gift.
When you come home, after being away for four months, you find
your parents are so much more cordial to you. Mom is happy to clean up your
messes and Dad wants to take you shopping. This is all fun and games until
January 1st rolls around and they are tired of your crap and are
ready to send you on your way. But, you’ll always have the fond memories of
seeing high school cronies and sharing stories of the current semester,
watching your 300-pound “druncle” fall on your 140 lb ex-boyfriend and
attempting to shimmy around the giant Christmas tree that stood in front of the
sliding glass patio doors, inevitably knocking it to the ground. The spreading
of needles and ornaments would always cause a panic followed by a good chewing
out for not using the front or back door. So, whether your parents live in the
‘ville or you will be traveling more than an hour home, be sure to get in some
school activities before your departure.
