Downtown in the ‘Ville
One of the supreme pleasures of Evansville life is spending a sunny day ambling around downtown. I love to peruse the antique stores, relax by the fountains and stop in for a cool beverage at one of the many local eateries. Add local music, fresh vegetables, classic cars, and a picnic lunch and I’m in heaven! The Downtown Development Division must have read my mind, look what they have planned for June!
Fabulous First Fridays- Starting June 6th!
Enjoy a variety of Downtown events the first Friday of every month from June to September!
Lunch in the Park

Remember the peanut butter sandwiches and chips your school would pack
for you on field trips? Now, enjoy a brown bag lunch while you enjoy the sweet
stylings of local entertainment on the riverfront. And, no ants!
Everybody’s working for the weekend, and what better way to spend your lunch on a casual Friday then enjoying a picnic and concert in the park? On the first Friday of every month you can purchase a brown bag lunch from a downtown restaurant, have a seat at the tables and chairs set up in the park on Fourth and Main Street and enjoy a concert from 11:00 am to 1:30 pm. A different artist will be featured each month. On June 6th, it’s Newburgh’s own Lauren Mazur, an acoustic folk-pop artist whose vocal stylings have been compared to the likes of Norah Jones, LeeAnn Rimes and Karen Carpenter. Mazur was the 2006 recipient of the Warrick County Arts Award from the Evansville Arts Council.
D-Patrick Ford Downtown Cruise In
I drive a mini-van, but if I close my eyes I can almost imagine that silver Chevy Venture parked behind my house is actually a 1956 pink and black Chevy Bel-Air with custom leopard interior. If you are like me and dream of a time when a car was art, or if you are lucky enough to own one of those historical gems then dust off the fuzzy dice and take a stroll down memory lane, also known as the D-Patrick Ford Down town Cruise in. Over 200 classic and show cars will line Main Street from 5:00 to 9:00 PM the first Friday of the month, starting June 6. We’ll have fun, fun, fun till the owner drives the T-Bird away!
Riverfront Entertainment Series
As if Fabulous
First Fridays wasn’t fabulous enough now you can end the evening with a cold
brewski and live, local music! The Riverfront Esplanade will be transformed
into a Bierstube the first Friday of the summer months from 8:00 pm to
Midnight. June 6th the Bierstube will be sponsored by Budweiser and will
feature music by Rachel and the Jimmies.
More Downtown Events!
Vanderburgh County Farm Bureau Farmer’s Market
My mother and I have a ritual on summer Fridays. We hit the downtown Farmer’s Market and buy tomatoes. Not grainy, pink tomatoes with the texture of watermelon, but juicy red tomatoes and mild yellow tomatoes. Then we take them home along with peppers, onions, garlic and cilantro and make salsa so good you can eat it with a spoon. If you haven’t tried a locally grown tomato then you haven’t lived! Taste the local flavor at the Vanderburgh County Farm Bureau Farmer’s Market, open every Friday from 7 am to 2:30 PM and located on the corner of Sycamore and Second Street. Over twenty vendors will be set up with plenty of fresh fruits and veggies, herbs, homemade soaps, and...what else? Be surprised!
1st Annual Downtown Multi-Cultural Festival and Dragon Boat Races
I will confess,
until last year I had never heard of a Dragon Boat. This traditional Chinese
boat race features 40 foot fiberglass and wood boats decorated with an
ornamental dragon head and is the fastest growing water sport in the Midwest! Funk
in the City is sponsoring The Third Annual Dragons on the Ohio event in
conjunction with the Downtown Multicultural Festival. June 7th from 10:00 a.m.
to 6:00 p.m., Riverside Drive will be transformed into a cornucopia of cuisine,
song, dance and artistic cultural expression highlighting the appreciation,
value and recognition of community diversity. Taste a myriad of foreign foods,
purchase locally made art and jewelry and enjoy a diverse line-up of musicians,
dancers and performers. Children get a festival passport to an interactive
activities booth that helps them explore other cultures and ideas.
