Eco-fashion

The fashion industry has been bitten by the eco bug! Eco-fashion refers to stylized clothing that uses environmentally sensitive fabrics and responsible production techniques. The health of consumers and the working conditions of the people in the fashion industry are also taken into account. Eco-fashion has been gaining popularity in recent years, but with top designers such as Philip Lim designing entirely eco-friendly collections, there has really been a shift to making eco-fashions the number one choice among fashion-savvy consumers. I can't think of an easier way to reduce your individual negative impact on the earth than by just getting dressed in the morning, so here are a few companies that are making environmentally and socially responsible clothing fashionable and available to the masses at fair prices.

PurePlay uses Eco-Logic Fabric in their super-chic line of sweatshirts and tees. Eco-Logic Fabric combines a five step process of 1) collecting cutting room floor fabric scraps (which reduces landfill waste) 2) sorting the scraps by color 3) breaking down the scraps to fiber form 4) re-spinning the fibers into yarn, and 5) knitting that yarn into the Eco-Logic Fabric that becomes their clothing line. Utilizing these steps creates a lot less stress for our planet. Most PurePlay items retail between $40-$100 and you can snag your own eco-wares this fall at Spree Boutique. www.spreeboutique.com

It's difficult to find eco-aware jeans at a non-premium denim price, but Good Society is trying to change that. Good Society offers up fashion-forward, fair-trade certified organic cotton jeans, all for around $90 per pair. They believe that "going green" isn't just about reducing their environmental impact, it's also about affirming that the people making their products were not exploited in the process; which leads to a web of positive change, i.e. a good society. As if that wasn't enough, Good Society also donates 10% of their proceeds to local environmentally conscious charities. Get your own pair on Good Society jeans this fall at District.
