Jeff Korb, District 3 County Commissioner, saddled up to the Hot Seat this month. Easily recognized by his trademark bowtie and with a charming personality to boot, Korb is very easy to talk to. Hard to track down, though. He has two jobs, one as County Commissioner, the other as Director of Development at St. Vincent’s Day Care, and sits on more boards than I have time to type.

hotseat.jpgHow did you end up in Evansville?
Born here. Grew up on the East side, went to Harrison.

What is the strangest job you have ever had?
I don’t think I’ve had a strange job. I’ve really only had 5 or 6 jobs my whole life. My first summer job was at my family’s laundry, Pearl Laundry; I did everything from wrapping packages to hanging the laundry. My most exciting job is being a County Commissioner. I get to have more fun than most people should.

What do you consider to be one of the most attractive attributes of Evansville?
The people that live here. You know what; they are very kind and patient people.

One of your favorite movies or book:
One of my favorite books, that I read once a year, is the 12th Angel, by Og Mandino. My favorite movie is Dave, and my other is It’s a Wonderful Life.

What is your favorite part of the day?
Morning. 5 a.m., morning. It’s very quiet; I get a lot of things done. I can either work out, read my Bible. A lot of options at that time of the day.

Name a city that you love to visit but could never live in.
Cancun. I’ve been there three times and love it. I’m the kind of guy when I’m on vacation I like sit and read and eat and sleep. It would lose the magic if I lived there.

When you are out and get recognized how does that make you feel?
Most people don’t recognize my face but they recognize my bow tie. They’ll say, “Hey, you’re the guy with the bow tie!”  People are always very kind when they come and talk to me.

As a child when your great-aunt asked you, “What do you want to be when you grow up?” How did you answer?
Just like my dad.

Would you rather pay $4 for a gallon of gas or a gallon of ice cream?
A gallon of ice cream. Absolutely a gallon of ice cream.

Can you identify the Indiana state bird and motto?
Oh, oh my gosh. Hang on. The bird is the cardinal; the state flower is the peony.

What’s a favorite childhood memory?
Going to my Grandmother’s in Elberfeld and spending the weekend. Number two would be spending a week at Young Life my senior year in high school.

Best restaurant in Evansville:
Hornville Tavern on the far North side. The food first, atmosphere second.

What is the best thing about your job?
Wow, the best thing about my county commissioner job is being able to bring a non-political attitude to decision making. That really takes people by surprise. I bring a business attitude of what’s best for the county. The best thing about my other job, which is Director of Development at St. Vincent’s Day Care, is being around the kids. I love it.

If you were an animal what animal would you be?
A dog. All I can tell you is that dogs at our house live like kings.

If you could go back in time which period would you want to go to?
I would love to go back to the Civil War period and hang with Abraham Lincoln. If I could have dinner with anybody I would want to eat with Jesus Christ. My first question would be what happened to all those people that you healed? What’s their story?

What is one aspect of your job that most people don’t know about?
I do a lot of praying about decisions that I make and people that I work with and for.

Proudest moments:
When I became a dad to David and Elizabeth. I would say easily that is my most proud and most humbling moment.

Three things you would never leave home without:
My cell phone, wallet.  Well, I would say keys, though.
