"Charlie Brown is the one person I identify with. C.B. is such a loser; he wasn't even the star of his own Halloween special."
--Chris Rock

In October, the leaves are changing and it’s time for cheesy family photos. You know, the ones where we all wear the white button up, jeans and bare feet and pose as an undisfunctional family… I recently received a sweet family photo of this nature from a relative. The only difference was the “Goth” child who wore teased jet-black hair, a great deal of black eye makeup and all black clothes. “One of these things is not like the other, one of these things just doesn’t belong,” came to mind. But, who am I to quash the individuality of a child. Individuality and self-expression are great, even if means you are a bit frightening.

October is a month of frightening things! On All Hallows Eve, children dress up like their favorite superhero or princess and solicit candy from the neighborhood. Sounds like a good gig to me…free candy. Yep Yep! But hey, if you are being petitioned for candy, skip the black and orange peanut butter chewy candies, those are the awfulest of the awful!

When you are ready to make your candy rounds, your first Halloween adventure starts with a safe and scary experience at Boo at the Zoo at Mesker Zoo on October19th, 20th, 26th, and 27th. Dressed in your Halloween costume, trick-or-treat at more than a dozen stations and enjoy crafts, murals, face painting, a haunted tram ride, games and a giant Tiger Bounce inflatable. Also, if you are interested in volunteering or becoming a sponsor for Boo at the Zoo, contact Stephanie Sanderson at 435-6143 ext. 406 ssanderson@meskerparkzoo.com or Charlotte Roesner at 435-6143 ext. 409 croesner@meskerparkzoo.com.

If your family doesn’t observe Halloween or your kids need a safe place to get their hands on some tooth decaying sweets, check out Crossroads Christian Church on October 28th from 4-8 p.m. Nut Night was started 21 years ago by families who couldn’t, in good conscience, celebrate the debauchery of Halloween. Since then, it has grown into a huge ministry for all members of the community.

According to Elaine Sollars, co-founder of Nut Night, “Nut night is truly awesome! Everyone is given tickets to get cotton candy, caramel apples, popcorn, snow cones, dinner is provided for everyone. Hot dogs, chips and drinks all for one price. There are rides, blow-ups galore and silly kid games where children can earn candy. Everyone dresses up. It's a zoo!” There is a $3.00 admission, which includes food, candy and carnival games and rides. The event is open to families and children of all ages and will have age appropriate activities. For information call Todd Bussey, Associate Pastor, at 812-858-8668.

Also, snatch up your favorite Halloween movies-it will be Christmas before they will be available again. These are my favorites…
