Dylan Gibbs
How's it going?
Besides living in hell every thing's great. I'm fully recuperated and
rejuvenated from this years Gathering of the Juggalos.) I'm really busy
and hyped about all of the things coming up...a slew of shows here in
E'ville, planning a mid-west tour, putting the finishing touches on my
third CD this year, The Halloween Massacre (a series of concerts right
around Halloween: The Massacre at Mesker 10/27, the Halloween Massacre
at Boney June’s on 10/31 and more TBA. So much Gory so little time.
When did you first begin playing music?
I grew up in Detroit Murder City. Music is everywhere there. I was 14
when I seriously started writing and experimenting with my own music.
Writing and rhyming just took over who I was… I've never slowed down..
I've never looked back. I have went a full 360 degrees. Now, everything
I've done serves as the fuel feeding this massive fire… this
all-consuming inferno that is Reverend Fang Gory.
Is there a song or two that you think are just perfect?
There's definitely too many to quickly narrow it down. If I absolutely
had to pick a few "perfect" songs... there would definitely be at least
a few from Esham's catalogue. A Nirvana track... “Come As You Are” by
Nirvana could be one... I would say Black Sabbath's "Iron Man" is a
perfect song.
How have your ideas changed musically and stylistically over the years?
I started out strictly doing really dark-underground-horror-rap.
Everything I've done has been gangsta to some extent (details are
sealed.) I did get into slightly commercial, maybe a little mainstream
sounding, but real, true hip-hop. I've done some heavy rock. Musically
I have gone full circle. I have entirely went back to my darkest roots
and brought with me everything I've learned and experienced along the
way. My style can't be compared to because it is such a (nearly)
perfected mesh of various styles and genres. I'm knocking down the
walls and blowing the roof off the game. There are no rules or
boundaries or limits on what I'm doing. The music is coming out fast
and furious. I'm raging against the machine if you know what I mean.
What's your proudest moment as a musician?
No specific moment comes immediately to mind. In ‘07 playing at the
Gathering of the Juggalos was a really good moment. EVERY time I get
love from a fan… those are the best moments.
What are some of your favorite albums and why?
KKKIll the Fetus by Esham because it was never been done before wicked
sh*t. Esham is the godfather of this wicked sh*t. It is a cult classic.
F.B.I. by the Dayton Family because it was representing hardcore
reality from the streets of Michigan. The beats, the rhymes, the
production was all completely on point. I have to mention Geto Boys'
Grip it! On That Other Level. Their dark-hardcore-underground
gangsta-lunatic-style had me from the first time I heard them.
You're flying on the Autobahn at 150 miles per hour-what's playing on the deck?
There's no question. Reverend Fang Gory’s "Notorious." It's track 3 on my E'ville Dead CD.
What's coming up in your future?
E'ville Dead will be officially released and available at Joe's
Records, Uptown Music, Atmosphere Records (on N. Main St.) and at
myspace.com/FangGory on Devil's Night.
Reverend Fang Gory's Halloween Massacre at Mesker will be an all day
music fest from 1 p.m.- 11 p.m. on October 27th. We'll have a slew of
wicked hardcore music. My set is going to rock your skull off.
Juggalos... Faygo will be free for all. Bring MCL, face paint, ninja
suits and costumes. I'm also playing at Boney June’s on Halloween Night
and I have some other shows tentatively scheduled throughout October
and beyond. Check myspace.com/FangGory for show/tour updates, info on
the E'ville Dead release party, and some free downloads too.
EQUIPMENT YOU REGULARLY USE?
