Kara K. Shepherd
Randy Moore, news
anchor at Fox News, agreed to sit down with me for a round of twenty questions.
Moore
has been an anchor at WTVW for more than 25 years. He’s laid back and very easy
to talk with and was a good sport about my questions! One of the charms of Evansville life is that
you can talk with people from all different walks of life and feel like you’ve
known them for along time. It was definitely that way with Randy Moore. How did you end up in Evansville?
Born and raised right here.
What is the strangest job you have ever had?
Well, maybe it’s not that strange but it was strange for me. One summer during college I worked at a shoe store in the mall. It didn’t last long.
Okay, my third question was an analogy question, so we skipped it. He didn’t sign up for the SAT, right?
What do you consider to be one of the most attractive attributes of Evansville?
Well, it rains here a lot, which I think makes for a great spring. I love spring here because of all the hardwood trees.
What’s one of your favorite quotes from a movie or a book? (Moore took a little while to answer this one because he had a hard time picking just one because he loves Cohen brother movies).
There are a few from Raising Arizona that are great. One would have to be, “Son, you got a panty on your head.”
What is an embarrassing moment not many people know about?
There was one time when we were on air and I had to move to another area while my co-anchor was on air. I thought that if I ducked and went behind her chair I would be low enough. I wasn’t, so my head from the nose up was visible.
What is your favorite part of the day?
Well, I’m not a morning person. (Moore anchors the 6 and 9 p.m. newscast). It’s that time of day that photographers call ‘the golden hour’, that time just before the sun goes down.
What city do you love to visit but could never live?
New York. I love the energy, all the things to do there. I could probably live there, but I wonder if it would eventually lose its charm.
When you are out and get recognized, how does that make you feel?
You know, it’s never overwhelming. A lot of people aren’t sure where they know me. They may think that they went to high school with me or something. We don’t have the kind of celebrity that actors in Hollywood have. People are always very kind, though.
As a child when people asked, “What do you want to be when you grow up?” how did you answer?
Well, as a young child I would have said I wanted to be a major league baseball player. But by the time I was in high school I knew I wanted to be in sports casting.
Would you rather pay $4 for a gallon of gas or a gallon of ice cream?
Oh, that easy. Vanilla ice cream. Everyone in my family makes fun of me because I drink my coffee black and I like vanilla ice cream. But vanilla really is a flavor!
Can you identify the Indiana state bird and motto?
I know the state bird is the cardinal, but I’m not sure about the motto….
What’s one of the best restaurants in Evansville? (Hard question because there are so many eateries here).
You haven’t had the Evansville experience until you’ve eaten at House of Como.
If you were an animal what would you be?
Definitely my cat. I was just telling him this morning that he had the best life.
If you could go back in time which period would you go to?
Civil War, or World War II. I find war times really interesting.
What is an aspect of your job that people don’t know about or think of?
Probably that we wear make-up, even the men. Not eyeliner and lipstick, though.
What are three items that you will never leave your home without?
Car keys, wallet, and a bible. (Moore can live without his cell phone…he left it at home that day.)
What’s one of your proudest moments?
Well, the birth of each of my three children was definitely it. In my career I am proud of how we covered the 2005 tornado. When something like that happens there are no work hours. Yeah, looking back on that I am really proud of that.
